Maritime multidimensionale Klanglandschaften

This research project investigates the acoustic dimensions of maritime life and explores how sound shapes human relationships with the sea. Drawing on approaches from sounds studies, cultural studies and the digital humanities, the research examines both anthropogenic and natural sound sources—from ship engines, harbor infrastructures, and working practices to wind, waves, and marine animal vocalizations.

By treating sound as a historical and cultural lens, the project develops new ways to understand maritime environments across past and present. It also integrates historical and contemporary soundscapes into museum research and practice, contributing to emerging discussions on the Anthropocene and enriching interpretive narratives of maritime cultures. Ultimately, the project seeks to illustrate how listening to the sea can deepen our understanding of maritime worlds and open imaginative pathways for their futures.
