Historical Background

Since September 28th 1939 the ship was part of the 1st Barrier Breaker Group (1. Sperrbrechergruppe) and after November 16th 1940 as Barrier Breaker Nr. 12 (Sperrbrecher 12 / XII) part of the 3rd Barrier Breaker Flotilla (3. Sperrbrecher-Flottille). The ship was involved in the manoeuvre to secure the damaged Heavy Cruiser LÜTZOW on April 11th 1940. During a mine-clearing operation, STOLZENFELS was hit by British Air-Torpedo on March 20th 1941 and starts to sink slowly. After several salvage actions, were FLAKs and other valuable goods were saved, sunk the STOLZENFELS finally on March 21th 1941 after 05:00 p.m. near the islands of Ameland. The crew could be saved.
