Munitions in the sea – Political perspectives on the North Sea
Film screening and lecture in English / Monday, November 24, 2025 / 6 to 9 p.m. / Free admission / Registration required
The DSM, in collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), is organising an evening event on the topic of Munitions in the sea – Political perspectives on the North Sea as part of the EU Interreg research project REMARCO. This event is aimed at experts and the interested public. In addition to a film screening, there will be presentations on the German government's emergency programme for munitions contamination in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
The EU-Interreg research project REMARCO takes an interdisciplinary and environmentally focused approach to addressing the issue of how to deal with the munitions in the North Sea, most of which were dumped there after the Second World War. Since then, they have been corroding, which leads to a release of toxicities into the water.
The evening will begin with an film clip from the documentary film ‘Baltic UXO’. Filmmaker Agne Dovydaityte and her team will be present.
Following the film, there will be a presentation by Wolfgang Sichermann on the German government's emergency programme for munitions contamination in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The professional and political perspectives of representatives from SeaTerra and the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitalisation of the State of Schleswig-Holstein (MEKUN) will provide insight into how the knowledge and experience gained from munitions recovery in the Baltic Sea can be transferred to the munitions problem in the North Sea.
The evening will conclude with a culinary reception and a guided tour through the museum.
If you have any questions, please contact Tülin Fidan (DSM), co-organiser of the event and research assistant in the REMARCO research project.
