"Reading old documents opens up deep insights into the lives of people who can no longer tell their stories themselves. Our research into the plundering of Jewish emigrants in Bremen and Bremerhaven during the Second World War has brought many biographies back to the surface. We use this to tell them, orally and in writing, including online with our LostLift database. This means that everyone has access to these valuable life stories at all times." About the person
Susanne Kiel has been working at the German Maritime Museum (DSM), Leibniz Institute of Maritime History in Bremerhaven since 2018 on the project "The handling of relocation goods of Jewish emigrants in Bremen after 1939: participants, networks and ways of utilization". In the project, which is funded by the German Lost Art Foundation, we are analyzing hundreds of archival documents to find out what happened to thousands of relocation goods that were to be sent from Bremen all over the world in 1939 to enable their owners to build a new home overseas. However, the goods remained in the port and were publicly auctioned off during the Second World War.
She has been leading the Bremen project since 2023, during the course of which the LostLift database was developed, which is accessible online and thus makes the research results available to all interested parties on a daily basis and at any time: www.lostlift.dsm.museum
