Dr. Mudassar Munir

“I grew up far from any ocean. The sea came to me through stories — Mohammad Bin Qasim, Vasco da Gama, the colonial navies. Always political. Always bringing consequences in its wake. I have never quite abandoned this political interpretation. This early understanding — of the sea as a vector of power rather than a natural backdrop — shapes everything I do at the German Maritime Museum today.”

About the person

Mudassar Munir holds a PhD in Philosophy and Human Sciences from the University of Milan, an MPhil from Quaid-i-Azam University, and a Master's in Development Studies from the University of Bayreuth. His PhD, and subsequent research, examined the state anthropologically. How does the state enter the body? Through education, through law, and through heritage. Through language, through ritual, through the stories we inherit and repeat. Through borders that shape where we can move, through documents that define who we are, through uniforms, flags, and anthems that teach us belonging. Through discipline, surveillance, and routine. Turning to port cities, he examines how these questions take on new significance in places where mobility, commerce, and intersecting political, cultural, and economic regimes shape everyday life.

His theoretical debts are to political anthropology, urban anthropology, maritime sociology, and the sociology of knowledge. He works within a Marxist and critical theory tradition.
